R evolved from the R Project for Statistical Computing , the leading open source platform for statistical computing. R is a GNU open source implementation of the S language and environment developed at Bell Laboratories by John Chambers and colleagues. In 1999, the Association for Computing Machinery presented its Software System Award to Dr. Chambers for the design and development of S.
